As I was reading through the lineage of Jesus in chapter 1 and came across verse 17:
Therefore all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ are fourteen generations.
So now I’m wondering why the triple reference to 14 generations? What did the people in the first century take this to mean?
Abraham to David was about 1,200 years.
David to Babylon captivity was about 600 years.
Babylon to Christ was also about 600 years.
So where does another 14 generations take us? Is that important? One thing that popped up in my search was the fall of Rome. There’s no concrete date for the actual fall as it was gradual, but it is around 500AD or so. I’m just purely guessing at this point but I’m planning to look more into this at some point.
Any thoughts?
It was my understanding that this may have been a memory aide for reciting the generations.

That could be. I’m probably overthinking this, but when it was repeated 3 times, it makes me wonder.
One thing that came up in my search was that three 14s are 42. (3×14=42) The number 42 comes up in revelation a couple times.
Revelation 11:2
2 And leave out the courtyard outside of the temple, and do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles, and they will trample the holy city for forty two months.
Revelation 13:5
5 And a mouth was given to him speaking great things and blasphemies, and authority to act was given to him for forty-two months.
Another was 42 is the answer to Life, The Universe, and Everything – according to Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
I’m leaving this study until I’m done with 153-fish.
