Encounter 36 – Syrophoenician woman and daughter

Matthew 15:21-28; Mark 7:25-30

And Jesus rose and went away from there, and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And when He had entered a house He wanted no one to know, and He was not able to be hidden.

But after hearing of Him, behold, a Canaanite woman, whose little daughter had an unclean spirit, came out of that region, falling at His feet. But the woman was a Greek of the Syrophoenician race. She cried to Him, saying, “Be merciful to me Lord, Son of David. My daughter is miserably demonized.” And she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

But He did not answer her a word. And His disciples came to Him and asked Him, saying, “Dismiss her, because she is crying after us.”

And He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

But coming, she was bowing to Him, saying, “Lord, help me.”

But He answered and said to her, “Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not good to be taking the children’s bread, and throwing it to the dogs.”

But she answered and said to Him, “Yes, Lord, for even the dogs feed on the children’s scraps falling from under the table of their lords.”

And Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, your faith is great. Because of this saying, go away. Let it be done to you as you wish. The demon has come out of your daughter.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.

And coming back into her home, she found the little girl* lying on the couch, and the demon was cast out.
