Encounter 60 – Salome, Mother of the Sons of Zebedee

Insights on the Sons of Zebedee’s Mother

Matthew 20:20-21, 27:38, Mark 15:27

Matthew 20:20–21 (LEB)
20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and* kneeling down she asked* something from him. 21 And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine may sit one at your right hand and one at your left in your kingdom.”

Matthew 27:55–56 (LEB)
55 And there were many women there, observing from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, serving him, 56 among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

Mark 15:40–41 (LEB)
40 And there were also women observing from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and Joses, and Salome, 41 who used to follow him and serve him when he was in Galilee, and many other women who went up with him to Jerusalem.

I didn’t list the mother of the sons of Zebedee earlier as she was only thinking of herself in the first verses with her mentioned in Matthew 20. But due to her appearance at the cross with many other women supporters of Jesus, she is now counted as an encounter. We have no idea how many other disciples Jesus had, but we do know that the numbers increased and decreased throughout the ministry of Jesus.

See my page on Mary, wife of Clopas and mother of James the Less/younger and Joses for her story.
