Encounter 39 – Lunatic Boy and his Father

Matthew 17:14-18, Mark 9:14-29, Luke 9:38-43

And it came to pass the next day, they came down from the mountain. And coming toward the disciples, they saw a great crowd about them, and scribes conversing with them.

And immediately, when coming to the crowd, the entire crowd saw Him, (and) they were amazed. And running, they met together with Him, (and) greeted Him, and He asked the scribes, “What are you discussing with them?”

And behold, one out of the crowd came up to Him, falling on his knees to Him, and cried out saying (to) Him, “Lord, Teacher, I brought my son to You. I beg You to look at my son. Have mercy on my son, for he is the only one born to me, for he is a lunatic, and he is suffering evil, having a dumb spirit. And behold, whenever (the) spirit seizes him, it throws him to the ground, and he suddenly screams, and it convulses him with foaming (at the mouth), and grinds his teeth, and withers. And crushing him, it leaves him with difficulty. And also many times it throws him, (and) he falls into the fire, and many times into the water, that it might destroy him. And I brought him to Your disciples, and I begged Your disciples, that they should cast it out, and they were not strong, and they were not able to cure him.”

But Jesus answered and said, “O unbelieving and perverted generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I tolerate you? Bring him here to Me.”

And they brought the boy to Him. Yet still approaching Him, and seeing Him, immediately the demon spirit burst upon him, and convulsed him. And falling on the ground, he rolled, foaming (at the mouth).

And He questioned his father, “How long a time has it been that this has happened to him?” And he said, “From (his) being a little boy. But if You are able, help us. Have compassion on us.”

And Jesus said to him, “If you are able [to believe]T, all things are possible to the one who believes.” And immediately crying, the father of the child said, “I believe. Help my unbelief.”

And seeing that a crowd ran together, Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Dumb and deaf spirit, I charge you, come out of him, and you will not enter into him again.” And Jesus rebuked it, and with crying and much convulsing, the demon came out of him. And he became as if dead, so many said that he died. But holding his hand, Jesus raised him, and he stood up, and He healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. And the boy was cured from that hour.

And all were amazed at the greatness of God. And while all were wondering at all things which Jesus did, and entering into a house, His disciples came to Jesus, (and) inquired of Him privately, and said, “Why were we not able to cast it out?” And He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible to you.* But this kind is not able to come out except in prayer [and fasting”]T.
