Encounter 22 – Jairus and His Daughter

Matthew 9:18-19,23-36 Mark 5:22-24,42,35-43 Luke 8:41-42,49-56

And while He was speaking these things to them, behold, a man who was one of the rulers of the synagogue, named Jairus, came up. And upon seeing Him, he fell, and he bowed down before Him, at Jesus’ feet, and began to entreat Him earnestly to come to his house, because he had an only daughter, for she was about twelve years old, and she was dying, saying, “My little daughter is presently at the point of death. But please come and lay Your hands on her, that she might get well, and will live.” And Jesus rose, and He followed him, and so did His disciples. But as He went, a great crowd was following Him, and pressing in against Him.

While He was speaking, a certain one came from the ruler of the synagogue’s (house), saying to him, “Your daughter has died. Why do you still bother the Teacher?” But when Jesus overheard what was being spoken, He answered and said to the synagogue ruler, “Do not be afraid any longer. Only believe, and she will be made well.” And when He had come to the house, He did not allow anyone to follow (and) to enter with Him, except Peter and James and John, the brother of James, and the girl’s father and mother. And when they came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, He saw the flute players, and the crowd making a commotion. And (the) people were all crying loudly and wailing, and they grieved for her. And entering in, He said to them, “Why make a commotion and cry? Stop crying. Leave, for the girl has not died, but she is asleep.” And they began laughing at Him, knowing that she had died. But when the crowd had been put out, He took the father of the child, and the mother, and those with Him, and He entered the room where the child was lying. And taking the child by the hand, He said to her, “Talitha kum,” which translated means, “Little girl, I say to you, rise.” And her spirit returned, and immediately the girl rose and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And He gave orders for something to be given to her to eat. And immediately her parents were completely amazed. But He greatly charged them to tell no one what had happened. And the fame of this went out to all the land.
