Encounter 35 – Boy With 5 Loaves and 2 Fishes

Matthew 14:13-21, Mark 6:32-44, Luke 9:11-17, John 6:1-14

But after these things, when Jesus heard it, He and they went away from there in a boat to a lonely place, the other side of the sea of Galilee, or Tiberias, by themselves.

And when the great crowds heard of this, and saw them going, and many recognized them, they followed Him, because they were seeing His signs that He was doing on the sick. And they ran there together on foot from all the cities, and got there ahead of them.

And when He went ashore, Jesus went up to the mountain, and He was there sitting with His disciples. And the Passover was near, the feast of the Jews.

And Jesus, lifting up (His) eyes, saw that a great crowd came to Him. And He was moved with compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And greeting them, He began to teach them many things. He was speaking to them concerning the kingdom of God, and healing their sick, those who had need of healing.

And the day began to decline. And when it was evening, already quite late, His disciples, the twelve, came up to Him, and they said, “For here we are in a desolate place, and it is already quite late. So send the crowds away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside, and find lodging, and buy food – bread for themselves [, for they have nothing]T to eat.”

But Jesus answered and said to them, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

And they said to Him, “Shall we go and spend two hundred denarion on bread, and give them something to eat?”

He said to Philip, “Where will we buy loaves, that these might eat?” But He said this, testing him, for He Himself knew what He was about to do.

Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarion worth of loaves are not sufficient for them, that each of them might receive a little.”

And He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go, and look.”

And when they found out, one of His disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to Him, “We have a boy here who has no more than only five barley loaves, and two fish. But what are these among so many, unless we go and buy food for all these people?”

And He said, “Bring them here to Me.”

Now there was much grass in the place. And Jesus commanded His disciples, “Have all of the crowds sit together to eat on the green grass in groups of about fifty each.”

And they did so, and they had all of the men sit together in companies of hundreds and of fifties. And Jesus, therefore, took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to Heaven, giving thanks, He blessed the food, and broke the loaves. He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples gave to the crowds, to those who were seated. And He kept giving them to the disciples to set before the crowd. And likewise He divided up also of the two fish among them all. And they all ate, as much as they wanted, and they were satisfied.

And when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather together the broken pieces that are left over, that nothing would be lost.”

And so they picked them up, and filled twelve baskets full with broken pieces from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten, and also of the fish. And there were numbered about five thousand men who ate the loaves, aside from women and children.

Then the men, seeing the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly the Prophet Who is coming to the world.”

Number of Fish: 1

Total fish: 45

The boy was only mentioned in the middle of the account of the feeding of the 5,000, and only in the Gospel of John. Since the boy was singled out, he was included in my list of 153 fish. But the 5,000 plus women and children? It is an indeterminate number so not included, but also because it would be WAY over 153.
