Encounter 4 – Birth of John the Baptist

Luke 1:57-80

And the time of Elizabeth’s delivery was fulfilled, and she bore a son. And the neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord was showing His great mercy to her, and they were rejoicing with her. And it came to pass on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child, and they were calling him by the name of his father, Zacharias. And his mother answered and said, “No, but he will be called John.” And they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.” And they were making signs to his father, as to what he wanted him to be called. And asking for a tablet, he wrote, saying, “His name is John.” And they all wondered. And his mouth and his tongue were immediately opened, and he spoke, blessing God. And Zacharias, his father, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying, “Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, because He visits and brings redemption to His people. And He raised a horn of salvation to us in the house of David, His servant, as He spoke through the mouth of His holy prophets from the beginning; (PS 106:10) “Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us;” To have mercy with our fathers, and to remember His holy covenant, an oath that He swore to Abraham our father, to grant to us to be delivered fearlessly out of the hand of our enemies, in holiness and righteousness in His sight to all our days [of our life]T. Yet even you, child, will be called ‘prophet of the Most High’, for you will go before the face of the Lord, to prepare His ways, to give the knowledge of salvation to His people, for the pardon of their sins, through the tender mercies of our God, in which the dawn of Heaven will visit us; to shine on those in darkness and sitting in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet to a way of peace.” And fear came upon all those around them, and these things were spoken of in all the hill country of Judea. And all who heard laid them up in their hearts, saying, “What then will this child be?” For also the hand of the Lord was with him. And the child grew, and became strong in spirit, and he was in the desert until the day of his appearing to Israel.
