Encounter 52 – Bartimaeus and Friend

Matthew 20:29-34, Mark 10:46b-52, Luke 18:35-43

Matthew 20:29-34, Mark 10:46b-52-merged

And after He had said these things, as they were leaving Jericho with His disciples, a large crowd followed Him. And two blind men, (including) a blind beggar named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, (were) sitting by the road. When hearing that it was Jesus the Nazarene passing by, he cried out, saying, “Lord Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on us!”

And the crowd charged them, and many were rebuking him, that they should be silent. And they cried out more, saying, “Lord, Son of David, deal kindly with us!”

And Jesus stopped, and said, “Call them here.” So they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take courage. Stand up. He is calling for you.” Throwing aside his cloak, he jumped up and came to Jesus.

And answering him, Jesus said, ‘What do you want Me to do for you?”

And they said to Him, “Lord, Rabbi, we want our eyes to be opened to receive sight.”

Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes. And Jesus said to him, “Go. Your faith has made you well.” And immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed Him on the road.

Luke 18:35-43

And it came to pass, when He came near Jericho, a certain blind man was sitting beside the road begging. And hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what this might be. And they brought him word that Jesus, the Nazarene, was passing by.

And he cried out, saying, “Jesus, Son of David, deal kindly with me!”

And those going ahead were rebuking him, that he might be silent. But he was crying out all the more, “Son of David, deal kindly with me.”

And Jesus stood and commanded him to be brought to Him. And coming near, He questioned him, saying, “What will you have Me do to you?” And he said, “Lord, I want to receive my sight.”

And Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight. Your faith has saved you.”

And immediately he received sight, and was following Him, glorifying God. And seeing this, all the people gave praise to God.

Matthew has 2 blind men, Mark & Luke both have 1. Again a case that the focus was on the one speaking for Mark & Luke – similar to the two demoniacs in Matthew 8:28-34. Also, they both ask for healing of their eyes. While Luke has this entering Jericho, Matthew and Mark tell us as they were leaving Jericho. See my post on chronologies to show that the Gospels don’t always line up the sequence of events.

Check out this spreadsheet showing the similarities between the 3 gospels. In some cases Matthew and Mark agree, in others Mark and Luke agree, and sometimes all 3agree. THere’s a slight change in words when the healing took place, but all 3 have them healed. I only do this because so many chronologies try to separate these into 2 different events.
