Encounter 12 – Nicodemus

John 3:1-21

And there was a man of the Pharisees – Nicodemus was his name, a ruler of the Jews. He came to Jesus at night, and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a Teacher Who has come from God, for no one is able to do these signs that You are doing if God were not with Him.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly I say to you, unless one is born from above, he is not able to see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How is a man who is old able to be born? Is he able to enter a second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he is not able to enter into the kingdom of God. That which has been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which has been born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not wonder at what I said to you, ‘You must be born from above’. The Spirit blows where He wills, and you hear His voice, but you do not know where He comes from, and where He goes. Thus it is for every one who has been born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How are these things able to happen?” Jesus answered and said to him, “You are the teacher of Israel, and you do not know these things? Truly, truly I say to you, what we have known, we speak, and what we have seen, we testify, and you do not receive our testimony. If I said earthly things to you, and you do not believe, how will you believe if I would say Heavenly things to you? And no one has ascended to Heaven, except He Who descended from Heaven, the Son of Man [who is in Heaven]T. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that every one who believes in Him [may not perish, but]T may have eternal life.” For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that everyone who believes in Him may not perish, but may have eternal life. For God did not send the Son to the world that He may judge the world, but that the world may be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged, but he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the light has come to the world, but men love the darkness rather than the light, for their works are evil. For every one who is doing wicked things hates the light, and does not come to the light, that his works may not be detected. But he who is doing the truth does come to the light, that his works may be manifested that they have been formed in God.

Here we have one of the more famous verses in the Bible – John 3:16. I feel that John 3:17 should be more well known as it shows that Jesus was sent to the world not to judge it, but that the world may be saved through Him. The judgement has already happened for those who don’t believe in Him.
