Matthew 1:18-25a, Mk 1:1
The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was like this: His mother Mary, being engaged to Joseph before their coming together, was found to have conceived by the Holy Spirit. But Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make a show of her, resolved to divorce her secretly. But while he was contemplating this, behold an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to accept your wife, Mary, for that conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you are to call His name ‘Jesus’, for He will save His people from their sins.” And all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken from the Lord by the prophet, saying, (IS 7:14) “Behold a virgin will conceive in the womb, and will bring forth a son, and they will call His name Emmanuel,” which being translated is “God with us”. And Joseph, rising from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord directed him, and accepted his wife. And he did not know her until she brought forth a [first born]T son.
